The Temecula Valley Unified School District board meeting ended abruptly Thursday night with newly elected Board President Joseph Komrosky citing “safety concerns.”
“Due to safety concerns, we’re adjourning the meeting,” he said in closing the December 4 meeting. “All additional items will be pushed to the next meeting due to safety.”
The board adjourned without electing a board clerk or vice clerk, appointing the superintendent to serve as the secretary of the board, selecting a School District Organization (SDO) representative and without approving the board meeting schedule for the upcoming calendar year, the board bylaws or the certification of signatures.
“The meeting was adjourned out of an abundance of caution following consultation with law enforcement,” Mike Marble, district spokesperson said in an email to The Riverside Record. “The District is currently determining next steps to address the unfinished business and will share updates with the TVUSD community once details are finalized.”
Immediately preceding the no-vote adjournment, the board had taken a recess to call district counsel to get a legal opinion on how to proceed after the board failed to elect a board clerk. Separate motions to appoint trustees Steven Schwartz, Jen Wiersma, Emil Barham and Dr. Melinda Anderson to the position all fell short.
Both Schwartz and Anderson loudly objected to the motions made to appoint them to the position of board clerk, while Wiersma and Barham highlighted their previous experience in the role.
The meeting, the final of Anderson’s year-long tenure as board president, was just the latest display of the deep fissures between the five trustees. Prior to the nomination of the board clerk, an apologetic Anderson made the motion to elect Komrosky to the role of president.

“Don’t be sorry, just be ready to take the consequences of what you did,” Schwartz said. “There will be consequences for this election. There will be money consequences, there will be lawsuit consequences. Students will be affected. Parents will be affected. All kinds of people will be affected.”
Schwartz said he would “do [his] best” to stay on the board, but would leave if the situation became untenable for him.
Anderson said her decision was motivated by the actions of Barham, an accusation he called, “absolutely unbelievable.” According to Barham, Anderson had previously told TVUSD attorney David Huff that she was being blackmailed, an assertion she vehemently denied at the meeting.
“There was no blackmail involved,” she said. “David Huff used the word blackmail. I didn’t use the word blackmail.”
The majority of those who spoke at the meeting, including a handful of students, were against Komrosky being elected board president for the third time in four years. Many specifically said they wanted to see Schwartz in the role, including Student Board Member Melissa Chai.
Chai, who provided a clear breakdown of the reasons she came to this conclusion, said that Schwartz had demonstrated the focus, professionalism and leadership necessary to serve as board president.
“Your opinion may differ from mine, and I hope it does, because different opinions help us all learn from each other, but I would urge that your final conclusion is informed by some of the guidelines and questions I have posed today,” she said. “This decision is not about politics, ideology or promises about the future, it’s about demonstrated maturity, judgment and commitment, which are qualities that ensure our board can operate effectively and remain focused on what matters most, the students that we serve.”
Following his nomination, Komrosky said he applauded all of the students who spoke at the meeting, but said that he was elected by those who supported him in 2022 during his first election to the seat and again in 2024 when he won the seat back after being successfully recalled.
“I represent the parents that put me here, not the students, because they’re minors,” he said. “Parents hold these values of the community.”
