The Riverside Record is a community-first, nonprofit digital newsroom serving people living and working in Riverside County, California. With more than a decade of experience in newsrooms across the country, founder Alicia Ramirez aims to bring to the county a community news outlet for the digital age.

With her experience as a journalist and commitment to serving all of the communities of Riverside County to guide her, she seeks to create a space for community members to not only talk about the news of the day but help create it. Community engagement is at the core of the business and helps steer the ship that is The Riverside Record.

Our Story

The Riverside Record was born in the fall of 2021 as founder Alicia Ramirez completed her graduate course work at West Virginia University’s Reed College of Media.

For the 11 years prior, she had worked in newsrooms across the nation. She started her career as a reporter in rural South Texas and then moved to Chicago where she was a designer for the Chicago Tribune and finally landed at CBS Los Angeles where she was a web producer.

It was during her graduate work that she realized she wanted to get back to her roots as a journalist — covering local government, keeping tabs on school boards and attending community events. And when it came time to settle on a place for this newsroom, Ramirez knew there was no better place to launch than Riverside County — a county with a rich history that is one of the fastest growing in the state.

She also knew there was an opportunity to build something new — a newsroom that trains, hires and supports those in the community who want to be part of telling the story of Riverside County. She hopes you’ll join her in making The Riverside Record the best newsroom it can be.

Mission Statement

The Riverside Record is not your average newsroom.

We don’t just tell the stories of the communities we seek to serve, we provide our neighbors with a platform to tell those stories themselves.

We prioritize context and insight over hype and sensationalism, striving to connect people through a shared love for their communities.

We hold those in positions of power accountable through in-depth, hyperlocal, and easy-to-understand reporting.

We invite the community to collaborate with us at every step of the way, and hope you’ll join us as we work to bring high-quality, independently-owned local journalism back to the Inland Empire.

Vision Statement

By actively collaborating with community members to tell the stories that matter, speak truth to power and help readers make sense of the world around them, The Riverside Record will be the most important news organization in Riverside County.
