The Riverside Unified School District Board of Trustees is accepting applications for the Trustee Area 4 seat following the death of longtime Trustee Tom Hunt.

The board unanimously made the decision to fill the seat by provisional appointment for the remainder of the seat’s term at a special meeting held last Monday.

During that meeting, the board also voted to appoint Board Clerk Noemi Hernandez Alexander and Board Member Brent Lee to an ad hoc committee tasked with recommending interview questions and procedures and screening all submitted applications to determine eligibility.

In order to be eligible, applicants must be at least 18 years old, a citizen of the state of California, a resident of Trustee Area 4 and a registered voter. In addition, applicants must not be convicted of a felony for a number of crimes related to the improper use of public money or otherwise be disqualified by the Constitution or California law from holding a civil office.

Outside of eligibility, the application also asks those interested in the role about their experience, their reason for applying, their basic understanding of the function of a school board, their commitment to public education and the district as well as their thoughts on the current state of the district.

Those interested have until July 30 at 4 p.m. to return their completed application, which can be found online here, and the conflict of information form, which can be found online here.

The board is set to interview candidates and swear in a new trustee at the Aug. 6 meeting. The successful candidate will fill the role until Dec. 13 when a newly elected trustee will take office.
