The Rancho Mirage City Council last week unanimously voted to appoint Eve Fromberg Edelstein to fill a vacancy created by the September resignation of former Councilmember Meg Marker over a new conflict of interest policy.

“I had an entirely different idea as to who I would be nominating today, and I came up with an entirely different idea during the course of the day yesterday,” Mayor Steve Downs said at the Nov. 15 special meeting. “After I listened to all of the presentations by all of the applicants yesterday…it became clear to me that the right thing for us to do is to move to a new generation of leaders in this city, and so that’s what we’ve done here today.”

Fromberg Edelstein is a practicing attorney with the Palm Springs law firm Fromberg Edelstein Fromberg with her father Jeffrey Fromberg and husband Mark Edelstein where she focuses on labor and employment, real estate, business law with an emphasis on small businesses, local businesses and nonprofit law.

“I am raising my family here because of the city’s continued quality of life and its priority on safety,” she said during her Nov. 14 interview. “This is a first class community, and I look forward to providing leadership to continue that standard.”

Fromberg Edelstein said her goals on the council would include “sound financial stewardship,” growing the city’s reputation as a “business-friendly community,” continue the city’s collaboration with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department and the Riverside County Fire Department to enhance public safety and increase educational opportunities for the city’s youth among others.

“I admit I do not know everything about this city,” she said. “Hence, I do not have a large agenda for immediate change. I also don’t feel the need to change what works.”

Fromberg Edelstein, who was raised in the region and has lived in the city since 1999, said the decision to apply for the council vacancy was not one she took lightly, understanding that being a member of the council would require both her time and attention.

“I want to serve with integrity and transparency for as long as this city and its constituency will have me,” she said. “I hope to create a legacy of meaningful service in the city for many years to come.”

Fromberg Edelstein was among 10 applicants the council interviewed for the vacancy, all of whom the council thanked for their willingness to serve the community.

“There’s only going to be one winner in this process, and certainly that person sits in this chamber today, but the real winner is everyone who lives in the city of Rancho Mirage,” Downs said. “So thank you all for being here yesterday, thank you for being here today.”
