The Lake Elsinore City Council yesterday unanimously voted to remove a ballot measure regarding the city treasurer position from the Nov. 5 general election due to concerns that it might confuse voters.

The ballot measure, originally approved by the council in April, would have asked voters whether the city treasurer position should remain an elected position or if it should be an appointed position to ensure that the person in the role was a qualified and experienced city finance and accounting professional.

However, city staff expressed concern that Lake Elsinore voters might be confused by seeing both this measure and the regular city treasurer election on the same ballot.

“Staff is requesting that the city council consider removing the ballot measure from the Nov. 5 general municipal election, just so we can do additional outreach to voters so that they’re not so confused with the city treasurer also being on the ballot,” Candice Alvarez, city clerk, said.

Removing the measure from the Nov. 5 ballot would also allow the city more time to provide comprehensive public outreach regarding the city treasurer position through town hall meetings, informational sessions and communication efforts, according to the staff report.

“The city staff has recommended that we postpone this measure to a future general election, which would take place in 2026,” Mayor Steve Manos said. “And we would take actions at that time to decide whether we wish to move forward with that or not.”

The move is estimated to save the city $38,000, according to the staff report.
