The Cathedral City Council Wednesday unanimously selected Christina Gordon to fill the District 3 seat left vacant following the November death of longtime Councilmember Mark Carnevale.
“I love this city, and I’m proud to call it home,” Gordon said at the special January 7 meeting. “This isn’t simply about filling a vacancy for me, it’s about my genuine desire to contribute to Cathedral City’s future.”
Gordon said she felt the biggest issues facing District 3 residents were the appointment of a city manager and police chief, increasing community engagement and improving quality of life.
“I think those are essential things as we think about how we’re going to serve and what can be accomplished in 11 months,” she said.
Gordon said she understood the time commitment she was signing up for after watching her mother balance taking care of the family and working with her role as a school board member, and told the council that she applied for the role because of her passion for public policy, strategic planning and effective governance.

“Throughout my career, I have been responsible for fiscal oversight, building and managing budgets, hiring and managing executives and holding organizations accountable for results,” she said. “I know how to develop and adhere to process, and I recognize that these skills translate directly to effective city government.”
According to the city, Gordon has more than 20 years of experience as a nonprofit executive and currently serves on the board of directors for the Boys and Girls Club of Cathedral City.
Gordon was one of 11 eligible candidates interviewed during the meeting. She will serve the remainder of Carnevale’s term, which is set to expire in November.
“We are pleased to welcome Councilmember Gordon to the City Council of Cathedral City,” Mayor Raymond Gregory said in a city news release. “All 11 candidates were impressive, and we thank everyone who expressed interest in serving our community. Councilmember Gordon’s dedication and experience in nonprofit leadership will serve District 3 residents well.”
