Riverside City Manager Mike Futrell announced Wednesday morning that he would be resigning from his role next month after being named the new Pasadena city manager.

“Pasadena holds a special place in my family’s life,” Futrell said in a press release. “I look forward to collaborating with the [Pasadena City Council], staff and community members to advance the city’s priorities and ensure Pasadena’s continued success.”

Futrell will replace current Pasadena City Manager Miguel Márquez, who announced his retirement last year according to the Pasadena Star-News. Futrell brings with him more than 30 years of public service experience. He previously served as South San Francisco’s city manager and was an executive vice president at Hawaii Gas. He is a retired Navy captain.

He is expected to start his new role on May 13, according to the city of Pasadena.

The city said Futrell would be tasked with “major citywide initiatives” like leading its Eaton fire recovery, the city’s transition to carbon-free electricity by the end of the decade and its long-term plan to reconnect neighborhoods split by an unfinished freeway.

Futrell was first hired as Riverside’s city manager in January 2023. During his tenure, he oversaw several construction projects like the Northside Agricultural Innovation Center and a new library in the Eastside neighborhood, according to a Riverside press release. He also worked on the pre-planning for the Museum of Riverside expansion and the proposed new Riverside Police Department headquarters.

The city also touted Futrell’s efforts to reach full police staffing for the first time in two decades, as well as an overall reduction in crime and credited him with helping to expand the city’s economic development in green tech and aerospace.

“Futrell has served Riverside well for more than three years and I am grateful for the many things we accomplished together,” Mayor Patricia Lock Dawson said in the press release. “I wish him the best in his new role in the city of Pasadena.”

The city is set to start the search for Futrell’s replacement in the coming weeks.
