The Alvord Unified School District Board of Education last week unanimously voted to appoint Reggie Thompkins to the role of superintendent effective May 1.

“Thompkins brings a strong commitment to student-centered leadership and is passionate about fostering inclusive, innovative learning environments,” the district said in a social post announcing the hire. “He looks forward to working in partnership with the board of education, dedicated staff, students, families and the broader Alvord community to move the district’s mission and vision forward.”

Thompkins is currently the assistant superintendent for instructional support at Corona-Norco Unified School District (CNUSD). According to his LinkedIn profile, he was previously an associate superintendent for the Riverside County Office of Education, an assistant superintendent for educational services at Orange Unified School District and a deputy superintendent for Oceanside Unified School District.

Before this, he was the administrative director of instructional support at CNUSD, where he also had experience as a high school principal, according to an Orange Unified news release that said he received a bachelor’s degree in sociology from California State University San Bernardino and a master’s in education administration from Azusa Pacific University. In 2020, he completed his doctor of education degree in organizational leadership from Brandman university, according to his LinkedIn profile.

As part of his employment agreement with the district, Thompkins’ initial contract will go through June 30, 2027, and he will receive a pro-rated salary of $315,000, which will remain in place through his first full academic year with the district. For the 2026-2027 school year, Thompkins will receive a salary of $326,025, with approval of the board and a positive evaluation.

He will also receive a family medical, dental and vision plan, a $500,000 life insurance policy and a laptop for home and/or travel use at no cost to him. He will also receive a $1,500 doctoral stipend and up to $25,000 in coaching services provided by a professional superintendent coach/mentor as approved by the board.

The appointment came less than a month after the board voted to release Superintendent Resma Byrne from her employment contract for no cause. Her time with the district officially ended April 11, though the board appointed Lisa Simon as interim superintendent March 24.

Simon retired last June from CNUSD where she was deputy superintendent of educational services.
